Creative Expression for Personal Growth Ages 18 - 25

$200

with Rae Balmuth MA, RDT

Calendar Current session started Nov 16, 2022 at 6 pm, runs for 4 weeks

MACC/Healing Arts Division - Dance and Movement Courses

This 4-week course is designed for students age 18-25, who enjoy artistic exploration but is also seeking a venue to develop self-esteem and build coping skills.  Arts-based curriculum will be used as an avenue to identify areas for personal growth, take ownership over the challenges students are experiencing in their life, and build mindfulness around one’s own actions.  Rather than focusing on mastery of each technique used in the course, participants will be offered the opportunity to cultivate a personal artistic vision  across multiple media.

Students can expect to play theatre games, engage role play, explore collage, create masks, tell story through physical expression and body language, and more.  This course is an excellent option for students wishing to connect socially  with peers in a playful, support-group type setting and should not be considered as a substitute for mental healthcare with a licensed practitioner.

MACC/Healing Arts Division - Dance and Movement Courses

What's underneath the surface, waiting to bloom in you?  For those feeling stuck, dealing with stress, or worrying about what's next in their journey MACC offers this process-over-product course to help students ages 12 - 17 dig deep to overcome challenges.  Led by a credentialed Drama Therapist and Therapeutic Art Life Coach, each class series will incorporate explorations in various studio art forms with theatrical role play, creative writing, and therapeutic verbal processing.  Our goal is to aid students in enriching their sense of self, discovering roadblocks to growth, and identifying helpful tools to stay motivated and open to anything life throws their way.  While this course is designed as community-based support and should not be considered licensed healthcare, we welcome individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, social skills, and learning differences as well as those without a diagnosis simply seeking a better understanding of the self.

As each class series will be tailored to the needs of the group, activities will rotate each semester and students are encouraged to re-enroll as often as desired to further facilitate their story. This course is an excellent option for students wishing to connect socially with peers in a playful, support-group type setting and should not be considered as a substitute for mental healthcare with a licensed practitioner.

Exact tools used each session may vary based on student interest. Previous sessions have included Drama Therapy assessment, mandala, poetry, theatrical tableau, and playwriting. This semester, we may focus more on watercolor painting, mask making, and script writing, but this will be specified more once students who enroll begin to set their own growth goals.

General outline:

week 1  - introductions, drama-therapy based assessment tools

week 2 - additional assessment tools, exploration of expressive preferences and personal strengths

week 3 - personal growth goal setting

week 4 - exploring obstacles to attaining personal growth goals

week 5 - exploring coping tools and things to help keep us accountable to our goals

week 6 - concretizing group activity for goals and commitments, brainstorming on final projects

week 7 - work day, mixed media final project showing 1 growth goal, 1 accountability tool, and 1 coping tool

Calendar Next available session starts Jan 11, 2023 at 4:30 pm, runs for 6 weeks

MACC/Healing Arts Division - Dance and Movement Courses

The arts are an integral learning tool that MACC believes all individuals should have access to.  We are excited to bring you this movement and music class built on the principles of Autism Movement Therapy, Drama Therapy, and the Melillo Method! This course is led by Rae Balmuth MA, RDT, a seasoned movement instructor, arts-based life coach, and former ABA therapist.  Students ages 7 - 12 will move and groove through exercises designed to wake up the brain, promote language development, build motor skills, and generate opportunities to build social connections.  While most of the class is movement-based, we also explore books, poetry, drawing, and theatrical role play.  Come play with us!

Each 6-week series will have a different theme, such as emotion words, colors, animals, or parts of speech. Movement sequences are designed to enhance communication between the two sides of the brain, and specific skills are targeted each week, such as emotion words, vocabulary to express artistic qualities, story-telling skills, and more. Every class meeting, students will have an opportunity for direct feedback from the facilitator as well as the chance to participate in group-focused, performance-based art making. This is an excellent course for students who struggle in a more traditional learning environment, and we welcome a variety of diagnoses including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury, and more.

Each class meeting we will pair language with movement exercises, and at least twice throughout the course we will incorporate additional artistic elements such as theatrical props or a drawing activity. Each class meeting will follow the same structure. Level of content will be set based on average success level of students in the class. Students can expect to spend 2 weeks on each theme (animals, colors, weather, etc.). Outcomes include increased impulse control, improved motor coordination, improved social skills, introductory understanding of using language as artistic description. Class materials are rooted in Autism Movement Therapy and Drama Therapy, and course is taught by Drama Therapist and former ABA therapist.

General outline:

-set movement warm up #1, stretches and cross lateral movements

-set movement warm up #2, balancing, locomotion, and patterning

-structured social circle

-across the floor locomotion

-creative activities (theatre games, drawings, poetry performances, and the like)

-mindfulness cool down

MACC/Healing Arts Division

1 Day Workshop, 3.5 hr (includes snack break)

Women ages 18+

In this workshop, women from all walks of life are invited to come together in a supportive community to explore movement, art, and sense of self.  No experience is necessary, and the course will rotate tools each session so re-enrollments are encouraged for those who enjoy the course.  We will use authentic movement and psychosomatic exploration to reconnect with self and  - quite literally – move the body out of the cycles of stress that hold us back from living in an empowered state.  Each workshop will use a different artistic medium through which to concretize our take-aways from movement exercises, as well as support a mindful state of being that aids in stress reduction and leads to an overall feeling of centerdness.   Expected outcomes include feeling grounded in the body, reduced stress, increased feelings of community support, and a finalized studio art piece to memorialize your experience.

Each workshop offered this semester will focus on a different studio art medium such as acrylic and collage. Workshops will follow a loose structure that will include:

-mindfulness warm up

-movement/music activities for grounding and self-exploration

-mindful studio art activity (first meeting will be acrylic)

-reflection on art pieces, community share

-drum circle and mantra closing ritual
