Students ages 10-15 will build a solid foundation as they learn about the elements of art and principles of design through different mediums like graphite, watercolor, clay, acrylic, and mixed media. They’ll take inspiration from art history and have fun experimenting with traditional art materials.

Weeks 14-15: Students will take their work outside, weather permitting, and will create paintings en plein air! The invention of tubed paint allowed artists to begin working outdoors with much greater ease. Students will learn about the history of plein air painting and use acrylic paint to study the landscape outdoors.
Week 16: Students will wrap up any previous projects and prepare work for display.

Digital Intermediate/Advanced - Mondays
with Jess Duke

Are you ready to take your drawing style and experience to the next level? Learn how to digitally draw and paint on an iPad using the app Procreate and an Apple Pencil.
This class teaches students ages 12 and up the universal language of digitizing art and the translatable terms and concepts. Tablets and digital drawing pens are provided. Students are able to bring their own preferred device. Must have prior experience with Procreate.
Week 1: Introduction and Understanding Perspective - During this session, we will begin by learning about one-point perspective. Learning Perspective is one of the most useful tools when trying to make a piece look believable and realistic. Everyone will create a landscape, room, or imaginary space.
Week 2: Shading and Understanding Light Sources - This week's lesson will allow students to learn how to use different layer settings and tools to help them create a clear light source. This will help students place believable shadows and create depth in their pieces. I will also show them several different shading styles based on the look they want to achieve.
Week 3: Begin Stylized Portrait - During this project, everyone will take or choose a reference photo of themselves or someone else in a dynamic pose to draw. Once their portrait is done, they will use what we have learned previously about perspective and shading to illustrate a background.
Week 4: Learning how to use Animation Tools - In the first portion of this class, students will finish developing their portraits from last week. Then, we will use Procreate to animate some of the elements in our background. Each student will choose which part they want to animate or they can create a simple character and animate that.
Week 5: Finish Animation and Begin Next Project - Our next project will be a poster to advertise either a product or an original character. This project will allow students to learn the importance of visual hierarchies and typography. Each student will create a typeface in Procreate or use an existing typeface to brand their project.
Week 6: How to Create Custom Brushes - This week, students will learn how to create a custom digital brush. This will allow students to expand what they are capable of drawing on Procreate. This class will also allow for one-on-ones to gage the students’ progress and what they’d like to do for their final project.
Week 7: Final Project - This class will be devoted to developing their ideas for their final project. I will provide each student with feedback on ways they can improve on their ideas and help them choose and create a cohesive color palette in Procreate.
Week 8: Final Project - During the first half of our class, I will teach the students how to have a positive and insightful critique. Everyone will be given the opportunity to share their work and receive feedback from their peers. This will not be mandatory, but encouraged! After this period, the students can finish working on their projects and make any last-minute changes.
