Portraiture Painting from Life

In this 4-week workshop, students will have the opportunity to work from a live model to gain an understanding of the building blocks of portrait painting and Jessica’s painting process. 

Students will focus on creating form, value, and a convincing likeness in oil paint. Instruction will be supplemented with demonstrations and Jessica will be providing one-on-one feedback and assisting students throughout the workshop. 

This course is open to artists with painting experience interested in improving their ability in traditional oil painting. 

Member discount: 15%. Supply fee: $50.

An additional $50 supply fee will be due to the teacher on the first day of class.

Drawing Fundamentals

In this class, students will master the basics of drawing. This class is designed for beginner to intermediate learners. Guided lessons will teach students how to set up a composition and will emphasize and incorporate the use of art elements. Special emphasis will be on light, value, and shading techniques. Gain an understanding of drawing supplies and how to properly use them. Students will walk away with tools, techniques and ways of looking at drawing to continue their practice with confidence!

Watercolor Tuesdays Afternoon

Working with watercolors is a great way to let your artistic side shine! This class will cover the basics of watercolor painting from brush strokes, mixing colors and shades, using wet and dry techniques and making the most out of those inevitable mistakes! Mastering the art of watercolors comes with practice and we develop these skills by creating landscapes, botanicals, and even some free-flowing abstracts. We will also work together through a still life composition developing the eye for light and perspective.

Transcending the Photograph

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 7, 2022 at 11 am, runs for 4 weeks

This workshop is designed to guide students toward creating a painting that doesn’t simply imitate a photograph but goes beyond what the photograph provides. Students will learn how to improve their photography, edit images, and print for better quality to avoid the usual pitfalls in interpreting photos. Students will learn what makes a good photo reference and how to improve upon it. We will study color relationships, creating volume, and space. There will be demonstrations on paint application, edges, brushstrokes, and color mixing. We’ll talk about ways to experiment and explore ways of seeing the picture and painting in ways that better captures the essence of your subject and the connection to your painting. Photo references will be provided for students to pick from.

Animal Portraits

This course will use a layered approach as we capture the likeness of animals in oil. Students will learn how to develop and create a life-like portrait. Each lesson will begin with a demonstration and then students will have individual instruction as they work through their painting. Photo references will be provided for students to pick from, or they may email Jessica with options to discuss.

Hand-Painted Signs

This class will begin in August when we have the required number of students. Please join the waitlist and we will contact you about the start date. 

Make a hand-painted sign with a personal mantra, business name, or other slogan on it. Learn about spacing, fonts, color and other design elements. 

This course will give students valuable hands-on design and layout skills, which could later be translated into the digital realm.

We will learn how to measure out and center text on a panel and how to optimize legibility. We will do an overview of fonts and learn how different font styles communicate different feelings. We will learn about drop-shadows, outlines, and other ways to make text pop.

By the end of the course, each student will have created a simple, professional-looking hand-painted sign.

Embroidery

This class will begin in September when we have the required number of students. Please join the waitlist and we will contact you about the start date. 

Embroidery is the ancient craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Over the last couple of years, this craft has gained popularity across the ages!

Students will take away basic hand embroidery skills and including including French Knots, Satin Stitch, Back Stitch, Running Stitch and Split Stitch and will be guided through proper use of tools and techniques to create fun embroidery sampler. Embroiderers of all levels welcome.

Drawing Essentials

Discover the world of drawing and hone your skills to recreate the world around you. This class will look at the fundamentals of drawing from shape to measurement, light, and perspective and how to choose the right tools for any composition. Throughout the class you will develop your eye for perceiving and rendering through the creation of a unique still life.
